A Private Museum Disguised as a Hotel Tower

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore rises 32 storeys above Raffles Avenue, a white rectangular block punctuated by small octagonal windows that architect Kevin Roche, a Pritzker Prize winner, set there on purpose: the eight-sided shape is a feng shui reference to an auspicious number, and it recurs from the façade down to the bathroom windows. Inside, the hotel holds close to 4,200 contemporary artworks, one of the largest collections in Southeast Asia, including pieces by Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Dale Chihuly. Frank Stella's Cornucopia hangs above the lobby floor; his Moby Dick, assembled from 138 pieces of wood, sits nearby. It reads less like hotel decor than a museum that happens to rent rooms.

Why It Works

We chose this address because the art collection is not a marketing line — it fills corridors and lounges that are themselves named after the artists shown in them, and it gives the hotel an identity that Marina Bay's newer towers, built for scale rather than character, don't try to match. Add 604 rooms with real views, two kitchens worth sitting down for, and a spa with a rare regional first, and the case closes itself. It suits travellers who want a serious hotel that also gives them something to look at.

Why This Location

Raffles Avenue puts the hotel within walking distance of Marina Bay's casino and shopping galleries, the Esplanade Theatre and the Suntec Singapore convention centre, with the Singapore Flyer visible from a number of rooms rather than just from a brochure. Changi Airport is a short 16 to 26 minutes away depending on traffic. September is worth flagging on a calendar: the hotel has one of the best vantage points over the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix circuit, and rooms book out accordingly.

Feng Shui in Eight Sides

Roche's octagonal windows aren't a one-off flourish: the shape repeats through the tower, down to the marble bathrooms, where deep tubs sit beside an octagonal pane rather than a standard one. Premier Suites, numbered to end in 26, go a step further with bathrooms that overlook the Singapore Flyer directly, a small detail that regular guests ask for by room number rather than by category. The effect is a building that feels designed around a single idea rather than value-engineered room by room, which is rarer at this scale than it should be.

Three Rooms to Eat In

Summer Pavilion carries the hotel's reputation for Cantonese cooking, with an evening set menu guests single out unprompted. Colony runs seven live cooking stations across Western and Asian repertoires and turns into a champagne brunch destination on Sundays. Chihuly Lounge, named for the glass artist whose work lines its walls, keeps things lighter: cocktails, small plates and an eight-course afternoon tea for guests who want ceremony without a full dinner seating.

A Spa Borrowed from the Sea

The hotel's spa was the first La Mer partner spa in Asia-Pacific, built around the brand's marine ingredients rather than a generic treatment menu, with blue lighting and sandstone-textured walls that nod to the ocean without overplaying it. The 24-hour gym, tripled in size in 2016, adds a movement studio, TRX rigs and free weights for guests who'd rather train than float — and an outdoor pool rounds out the recovery side for anyone doing both.
